Writing

Writing instruction consists of 2 components. One is journal writing, and the other is writing compositions.

The children write in their journals two days a week. Sometimes I give them a topic to write about, and sometimes they choose their own topics. The children write and draw pictures to illustrate their stories. I do not grade the journals, but I do look at them and speak to the students individually about their writing. The children are also given a chance to share their journals aloud if they wish.

The second component of writing instruction is writing compositions. The students will begin by writing complete sentences and then learning to expand their thoughts. By the end of the year, each child is expected to be able to write a 3 to 5 sentence paragraph related to a given topic.
