Word Families / Sight
Words
One of the ways we
teach children to decode words is to teach them
to look for "chunks" or parts of the
word that they know (at...as
in cat
or that).
Words that have the same chunk are called word
families. Each week we will be learning three new
word families that will help your child learn to
read.
Also each week, we
work on high frequency words or "sight"
words. These are words that do not follow the
rules - so the children must learn them by sight.
Each Monday, your child will receive a list of
sight words (between 10 - 15 words) that will
help prepare them for our sight word test on
Friday. On Friday, I will write the words on
index cards. The children must be able to read
the cards fluently (in any order) in order to
receive credit. The children must be familiar
enough with the word to say it fluently, because
I will not allow time for the words to be sounded
out.
