Math

We use the Saxon Math program in first grade. It is very systematic. Skills are introduced, reinforced, and practiced daily to ensure mastery. I will be supplementing some areas of this program because I do not feel that it gives enough emphasis to certain concepts. We will be spending a lot of time this year on addition and subtraction facts to 18. At the beginning of the year, I allow the children to use counters (if they need them) to complete their problems. However, as the year progresses, we use manipulatives less and less. Math will be much easier for your child at that point if he/she knows the addition and subtraction facts. Please work on these at home each night for homework.
