Guided Reading

We begin first grade with a review of the alphabet and letter sounds. At the beginning of the second six weeks, we jump right into reading groups. I will listen to the students read and take notes on the strategies they use to make meaning of the story. This will help me determine in which group they should be placed. Some students pick up certain concepts faster than others. For this reason, your child's placement in a group may not be fixed. I move children throughout the year based on progress. Sometimes we use our basal reader in reading group, but other times I choose different books for the group depending on student interests or the concept I am teaching. I take extensive notes and do many informal reading assessments on each child in order to give an oral reading grade that will be factored into the language arts grade shown on each report card.
